Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

Recognise symptoms, investigate safely and decide when to escalate a water-system concern.

First response: Isolate suspect water from potable use when contamination is possible. Notify the captain/chief engineer; capture the sample point, time, observations and instrument readings. Do not add chemicals or return a system to service based on appearance alone.
Colour & appearance

Blue or Green Water at a Tap

Blue/green staining or coloured water can point to copper corrosion, but backflow or other contamination must also be excluded.

Colour & appearance

Brown, Black or Orange Water

Discoloured water may contain iron/manganese deposits, corrosion products or disturbed tank sediment.

Colour & appearance

Milky or Cloudy Water

White cloudiness can be entrained air, calcium-carbonate particles or other suspended matter.

Colour & appearance

White Scale in Hot-Water Equipment

White deposits and declining heating efficiency can indicate calcium-carbonate scale formation.

Odour & taste

Rotten-Egg or Sulfur-like Odour

A sulfide-like smell may arise from the source, a heater, microbial activity or a local drain.

Odour & taste

Earthy, Musty or Stale Water

Persistent musty smells may be associated with source-water compounds, aged water, carbon filter condition or microbial growth.

Odour & taste

Fuel, Solvent or Chemical Taste/Odour

A fuel-like or solvent-like odour is a potential contamination event requiring immediate escalation.

Odour & taste

Metallic Taste or Coloured Staining

Metallic taste can reflect pipe materials, stagnation or changing water chemistry; taste does not identify a specific metal.

Preview guide →
Hygiene & disinfection

Unexpectedly Low Free-Chlorine Residual

A low measured disinfectant residual can reflect consumption, a faulty reading or treatment removal.

Preview guide →
Hygiene & disinfection

UV-C Alarm or Low Reactor Intensity

A glowing lamp is not proof of adequate UV dose; alarms require verified response.

Preview guide →
Hygiene & disinfection

Repeated Microbiological Positives

Recurring positive laboratory findings call for investigation of the whole source-to-outlet system.

Preview guide →
Hygiene & disinfection

Biofilm or Slime Returns After Cleaning

Recurring slime may indicate persistent water age, nutrients or poorly treated internal surfaces.

Filtration & watermakers

Filters Block Too Quickly

Frequent cartridge changes are a symptom; the source of solids and hydraulic conditions must be identified.

Preview guide →
Filtration & watermakers

Low Pressure or Uneven Flow at Outlets

Low pressure can be mechanical, hydraulic or caused by fouling, and should not be misdiagnosed as low-water quality.

Preview guide →
Filtration & watermakers

Rising Watermaker Permeate TDS

Increased RO product conductivity can signal changing source conditions or membrane/system problems.

Filtration & watermakers

Activated Carbon: Taste Breakthrough or Residual Loss

Carbon adsorption can improve taste but also remove disinfectant residual and eventually lose capacity.

Preview guide →
Corrosion & materials

Pinhole Leaks or Pitting in Stainless Steel

Stainless steel can pit or suffer crevice corrosion in chloride-containing, stagnant or poorly designed environments.

Preview guide →
Corrosion & materials

Galvanic Corrosion at Mixed-Metal Connections

Dissimilar metals electrically connected in a conductive electrolyte may accelerate attack on the less noble material.

Preview guide →
Corrosion & materials

Rapid Metal Damage: Stray Current or Galvanic?

Unexpected rapid metal loss can involve electrical leakage but not every corrosion defect is stray-current corrosion.

Preview guide →
Pool & spa

Pool/Spa: Cloudy Water or Unstable Disinfectant

A cloudy spa or pool can reflect filtration, bather loading, water chemistry or insufficient disinfection.
